Highlights:

The Public Information Officer serves as the primary point of contact between the EOC, the media and the public. The Public Information Officer prepares information releases, briefs media representatives, and provides for press conferences. Normally, the Public Information Officer also oversees the Rumor Control activity.

Primary responsibilities include:

  1. Serving as the central coordination point for the agency or jurisdiction for all media releases.
  2. Ensuring that the public within the affected area receives complete, accurate, and consistent information about life safety procedures, public health advisories, relief and assistance programs and other vital information.
  3. Coordinating media releases with other Public Information Officers at incident or representing other affected emergency response agencies as required.
  4. Developing the format for press conferences, in conjunction with the EOC director.
  5. Maintaining a positive relationship with the media representatives.

Guest Instructor: Chuck Rossie, THE CMR Group
Chuck Rossie established The CMR GROUP, Inc., in 1985 to provide media training and crisis communication services. He has personally coached thousands of executives in the private sector and public information officers in government on dealing with the media in both routine and emergency or crisis situations.

He was an instructor at the California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI). He has also worked with major corporations and other entities, as well as individuals seeking access to the news media.

His journalism career started at the Daily Bruin at UCLA. He worked at the LA TIMES, the Fresno Bee, Modesto Bee, and the Sacramento Bee, and KOVR TV in Sacramento. At KOVR TV he worked as a field reporter and switched to assignment editor, the TV version of the city editor. His last tour in TV was with KNBC TV in Los Angeles where he was awarded an EMMY citation for local news coverage.

He is a member of the Public Relations Society of America, the Radio and TV News Directors Association, the California Association of Public Information Officers, and the California Yacht Club.

Annual Meeting/Training Calendar

Monthly meetings for SB CAER are held at various local businesses bi-monthly on the Fourth Wednesday of the month starting at 2:00 pm.

Representatives of member companies are welcome, as are members of interested businesses, industry, agencies, and other organizations concerned with risk-mitigation and hazardous material/waste handling.
